Patriotic support for our troops is overwhelming - members are still wearing their red shirts on Fridays to show support for the troops serving far from home on deployment and for their families left behind. Parcels, cards and letters also books and videos have been sent to our troops. Gifts of toys have been sent to Military Family Resource Support Centres at Canadian Forces Bases in time for Christmas.
Remembrance Day and Founders Day Services are well attended by Chapter members. Wreaths are laid at local cenotaphs across Ontario in memory of all Veterans. |
In 2005, would start out looking for the men and women who served in the Great War of 1914 – 1918. At first, only the 1914 enlistments were collected, subsequently all of the enlistments of that conflict, from Chatham-Kent. By 2008, there were several thousand and then it was on to the enlistments of the second Great War of 1939 – 1945.
Members from the IODE Kent Regiment Chapter helped canvassed the community to obtain information on citizens in the armed services and recorded it in the Books of Remembrance. After WW II, members did the same for the men and women of that conflict. In total, there are 13 beautiful Books of Remembrance which were given to the Chatham-Kent Museum for safekeeping. The Museum has graciously shared the digitized books on our website, as they are a frequently used research resource. Today, there are over 12,240 enlistments and still counting.
IODE Kent Regiment Chapter was overwhelmed by the response, and so the Gathering Our Heroes project was created. The website was created in 2013, as the 100th anniversary project of the Chapter with the support of a New Horizons for Seniors grant from the Government of Canada.
